About Khem D. Irby

My story begins with my single mother who was an avid reader.  It was important for her to borrow books from the library, invest in World Book encyclopedias and prepare me for school.  I am her only child and she gave me everything she could.  My mother invented Take Your Daughter to Work Day on many occasions.  I am the Mama of six adult children and four grandchildren.  We moved to North Carolina in 2012.  I then had to learn a new system in order for them to continue being successful.  I was first elected in 2018 and again in 2022.    My faith and village keep me on purpose and push me forward.  BLAC Face clubs are being born out of an observation and data that continues to place Black children at the bottom.  I believe that many of our children do not know the greatness of their ancestors before the nightmare and brutality imposed upon them in the United States.  The truth is that our ancestors created languages, universities, government, art, music, were architects, traveled before Columbus and had excellence of character through their cultural beliefs.  Black families have not been told of this greatness and believe that their history begins in the chains of the African Holocaust.  As a solution, I believe that we must tell the stories of African Greatness and Black American Resistance in our own voice.  Our children/families need to be empowered.  Black children can thrive when they see themselves in every aspect of life that impacts their future.
